The decision of the National Bank of Serbia to revoke the operating license of Alta Banka from Belgrade does not pose a risk to the financial stability of Montenegro, the Central Bank (CBCG) announced.

“It is important to emphasize that Alta Bank does not operate in Montenegro, that is, it does not have a license to perform banking operations from the Central Bank of Montenegro. Alta Bank’s operations are related exclusively to Serbia and North Macedonia,” the statement published on the Central Bank of Montenegro website states.

They added that the payment institution Alta Pay Group Podgorica in Montenegro provides exclusively payment and money transfer services, and is supervised by the Central Bank of Montenegro.

“It does not have the status of a bank and does not accept deposits from citizens, so it cannot in any way negatively affect financial stability, and the Central Bank of Montenegro has taken all necessary measures within its jurisdiction to prevent risks for users of its services,” the Central Bank of Montenegro explained.

They also announced that checks had been initiated well before the current events regarding whether Alta Pay Group Podgorica still met the legal requirements for providing payment services.

“Regarding the deadlines prescribed by law, these procedures are ongoing, which is why their details cannot be disclosed,” the Central Bank of Montenegro said.

When it comes to the Montenegrin financial system, they said that the situation is completely stable, and that the Central Bank of Montenegro will continue to inform the public in a timely manner about all issues of importance.
