NEW DELHI– India has advised its citizens living in or traveling to France and Italy, including students, to follow safety advisories issued by Indian embassies and local authorities as protests and civil unrest disrupt transportation and public activities in parts of Europe.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Tuesday that Indian diplomatic missions in both countries had issued advisories urging citizens to remain vigilant and avoid areas affected by demonstrations.

“Regarding the disturbances and ongoing protests in Europe, our Embassies in France and Italy have issued advisories,” Jaiswal said during a weekly media briefing in New Delhi.

The Indian Embassy in France issued a travel and safety advisory after demonstrations over the rising cost of living escalated into violent clashes. The embassy urged Indian nationals and travelers to exercise caution, particularly in crowded public spaces and areas where protests are taking place.

According to the advisory, demonstrations and civil unrest in France have resulted in localized curfews and disruptions to transportation services, including possible delays and reductions in road travel and public transit.

In a message posted on X, the embassy encouraged Indian citizens to avoid large gatherings, comply with instructions from French authorities and remain informed about developments in their areas.

Travelers were also advised to contact airlines and travel agencies to confirm schedules and check for potential changes caused by the unrest.

“We have advised Indian nationals residing in these countries, including students, to follow the advisories issued by our embassies as well as the local authorities,” Jaiswal said.

The Indian Embassy in Rome issued a similar warning following reports of violent confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers in several Italian cities.

“We advise Indian nationals to exercise caution, avoid crowded areas and locations where protests are taking place and follow local news about such events,” the embassy said in a post on X.

The advisory followed clashes in Milan and Bologna that disrupted public transportation and raised concerns about public safety.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said protesters threw stones at law enforcement officers in Milan, injuring several personnel. In Bologna, authorities temporarily closed the city’s railway station as a precaution amid the unrest.

Indian officials have urged citizens in both countries to monitor local developments, follow official safety instructions and take appropriate precautions while traveling or attending public events. (Source: IANS)
