Cape Town’s love for food, culture and international experiences will take centre stage when A Taste of Belgium returns to Newlands on Saturday, November 14.

Now in its 15th edition, the annual festival will take place at the Belgian Residence from 10am to 5pm, bringing together Belgian flavours, local businesses, live entertainment and family-friendly activities.

Hosted by the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa (BCCSA), in partnership with the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town, the free event celebrates the cultural connections between Belgium and South Africa.

This year’s theme, Belgium. More than you think, aims to showcase the European country’s culture, heritage and traditions beyond its well-known chocolate and beer, while encouraging visitors to discover authentic Belgian experiences available in Cape Town.

    Food, music and family-friendly entertainment

Festivalgoers can look forward to traditional Belgian cuisine, freshly made waffles, gourmet frites, wine tastings and speciality brews at the open-air beer garden.

Live musical performances will provide entertainment throughout the day, while families can explore interactive cultural displays, children’s activities and a special appearance by Smurf Cosplay.

The festival will also feature local Belgian businesses, independent entrepreneurs and craft market vendors, giving visitors an opportunity to support small businesses and discover their offerings.

Consul General of Belgium in Cape Town Nicolas Fierens Gevaert said the festival had grown into a cherished tradition since its first edition in 2014.

“Over the years, it has become much more than a showcase of Belgian food, culture and craftsmanship; it is a platform that brings people together and strengthens the ties between Belgium, South Africa and Cape Town,” he said.

Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa vice-president Jo Serekonyane said the event had evolved from a small gathering for the Belgian community into an established cultural exchange event on Cape Town’s calendar.

“The infusion of lekker local vibes and authentic Belgian authenticity is indeed the secret recipe that we believe in as Team Belgium,” Serekonyane said.

Visitors attending the festival can make use of designated off-site parking, with a complimentary shuttle service operating regularly between the parking area and the venue.
