    1. Did we level up enough to evolve to a decent government so now we don’t need it?

Shortly after his interview, Angela Rayner, now head of the rebranded department, confirmed the change in a social media post saying: **”No more gimmicks and slogans**, but the hard yards of governing in the national interest.

I guess “Change” and “The party of fiscal responsibility” are getting binned too.

    3. Levelling up was always a bullshit gimmick phrase that meant next to nothing other than unspecified undifferentiated “stuff gets better I guess”. Removing it is just tidying up the language.

Good. It was just a chew toy the Tories threw to the public to keep them occupied for a while. There was never any real intention to “level up” anything, except a few Tory bank accounts.

I could never take the phrase seriously to be honest, as it was coined by Boris Johnson and it always sounded by hollow.

    6. Near me they knocked down some buildings and put a painted black wall around the site with signs for “We are levelling up” every 10ft.

That was years ago now, and no further work has been carried out. The paint is peeling, buddleia is overgrowing over the 9ft wall and the boards are falling down. A real metaphor for the last government.

According to the article, they are not getting rid of the concept, but they’re replacing “levelling up” with “local government”. So when your town gets a new fountain or something, instead of it being “provided by levelling up” it’s “provided by Local Government”, which sounds a bit more like the credit being given to the right place.

I’ve done more levelling up playing Hogwarts Legacy over the last month than the Conservatives managed to achieve in 4 years.

    9. I moved back to the UK in 2021 and heard “leveling up” and had no idea what it meant.

I still don’t, and I’m not convinced the Tories did either.

Add it to “march of the makers”, “Northern powerhouse”, “big society”.

In a world of finite money and resources, for every levelling up, there needs to be corresponding ‘levelling down’.

For some reason that doesn’t get much of a mention!

One of the few gimmicks that wasn’t three random words.

      Get Brexit Done
      Strong and Stable
      Take Back Control

    13. But… we still have a secretary of state for leveling up? Lol

      >The new Labour government is replacing the words ‘levelling up’ with ‘local government’ in the department’s name and ministerial titles, minister Jim McMahon has said.

Fair. Thought we already had a local goverments minister.

    14. I’d like to see Levelling Down, where the wealthy experience poverty first-hand.
