The recommendations should probably also include putting a rocket under Ofgem to finally sort out zonal pricing, energy storage and the other stuff it’s been fannying about over for years.

Worth noting that this is the soon-to-be public owned Electricity System Operator that’s saying this.

Smart grids, more decentralised on site power please we need adaptive capacity

I think there is a general lack of appreciation on just how much Truss and Sunak took their foot off the accelerator on climate change.

None of this is new. These ‘no regrets’ decisions could have and should have been taken by 2020. 4 years wasted.

For heat pumps specifically, we need to sort out the cost differential between gas and electricity.

A heat pump is probably 4x the efficiency of a gas boiler, but electricity is about 4x the cost of gas.

Electricity can be produced with extremely low carbon emissions, while gas has high carbon emissions, yet most green levies are placed on electricity, making it artificially more expensive than it should be, while gas remains cheap.

We need to move green levies off of electricity and onto gas, once this is done heat pumps will become a no-brainer and people will start to switch because it’s just cheaper to run.

Subsidies for installation of heat pumps can then be reserved for those who need financial support, not the rich who can technically afford the initial outlay, but don’t because the running costs are too unclear.

Of course this can’t happen tomorrow, we need a 10 year migration of the levies from electric to gas, especially so vulnerable people have time to adjust.
