Today in 1563, on the feast of Saint George, the first stone of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Madrid was laid. It is a complex that includes a royal palace, a basilica, a pantheon, a library, a school and a monastery that was commissioned by D. Felipe II.
