The DGT is making it easier than ever to comply with Spain’s environmental rules. From now on, those all-important eco-stickers can be purchased at tobacconists nationwide for just €5.

Back in 2016, the DGT rolled out its sticker system to classify vehicles based on their emissions. These labels are vital for determining which cars can enter Low Emission Zones across Spanish cities.

Here’s how the stickers stack up:

    • Blue: “Zero Emissions” – For battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids with over 40km electric range, and range-extended EVs.
    • Green & Blue: “ECO” – For hybrids, plug-in hybrids with less than 40km range, and gas-powered vehicles (GNC, GNL, or GLP).
    • Green: “C” – For petrol cars registered after 2006 and diesels post-2014.
    • Yellow: “B” – For petrol cars from 2001-2006 and diesels from 2006-2014.

If your car doesn’t fit into any of these categories – such as pre-2001 petrol vehicles and pre-2006 diesels – you’re out of luck. These are considered the most polluting cars and don’t qualify for a DGT sticker.

How do I get an emission sticker for Spain?

Thanks to a new agreement between the DGT and Logista (formerly Tabacalera), obtaining your sticker is now a doddle. Just head to your local tobacconist, provide your vehicle’s registration number, and pay €5. No paperwork, no hassle – and you’ll leave with your sticker in hand.

What happens if you drive in a low-emission zone?

So far, more than 5,000 stickers have been distributed to over 500 tobacconists in 300 towns and cities across Spain. This move aims to ensure that every motorist has easy access to the eco-labels they need.

Low Emission Zones are becoming more widespread, and many municipalities enforce automatic fines for vehicles entering these areas without the proper sticker. The rules are here to stay, so don’t get caught out.
