Spanish law firms Uría Menéndez and Garrigues have promoted seven and 18 lawyers, respectively, to partner, with appointments spanning Spain, Portugal, Chile, and Peru, effective January 1, 2025.
Many are within the firms’ corporate practices, as law firm leaders observed business steadily increasing throughout the year, with stabilizing interest rates and a positive economic forecast expected to further boost activity in the M&A market.
Garrigues’ 18 new equity partners span corporate and M&A, tax, labor and employment, administrative and constitutional law, as well as G-advisory—the firm’s energy and ESG consulting arm. The corporate practice has the largest share of promoted lawyers at seven, while the second-most represented group is tax with six.
“We strive to maintain a balanced approach that reflects both the merit of our people and the needs of the firm,” a spokesperson for Garrigues told Law.com International.
Garrigues promoted two more partners this year than in 2023 and 2022, when 16 were elevated both years. Half of the promoted lawyers were women in 2022. This year, only five of the 18 Garrigues lawyers named partners are women.
Uría Menéndez’s seven new partners also reflect a strong focus on corporate law, alongside elevations in public law, digital law, and tax. The law firm noted in its announcement that all of the promoted lawyers have spent “most” of their careers at Uría Menéndez. Last year, the firm elevated two lawyers to partner, according to a spokesperson.
