If you’re a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, then Spain’s Comarca de Vératton is the destination for you. Located in the rural region of La Vera in Extremadura, this unique holiday complex invites fans of nature and fantasy literature to experience living just like a hobbit.
Built into the hillside, it has a bioclimatic design and lush surroundings, with plenty of rustic, modern, and sustainable features.

The property is part of a complex – a decade-long labour of love by Iryna Zhelvanava and Óscar Muñoz. It features vibrant round doors and interiors inspired by Tolkien’s Shire. Built on a 10-hectare estate near the Sierra de Gredos, the complex harmonises sustainable architecture with the stunning Extremadura landscape.

“We wanted something ancestral,” Muñoz told El Pais. “Living under layers of earth has a protective quality that resonates with human origins.”
These eco-friendly homes incorporate local materials, 19th-century restored furniture, and off-grid photovoltaic systems to minimise environmental impact.
Each home boasts handcrafted interiors with exposed wooden beams, stone fireplaces, and large, round windows that frame panoramic views of the surrounding forests and mountains. Outdoor Nordic baths provide a serene spot for relaxation, while nearby walking trails, gardens, and starlit skies create an enchanting atmosphere.
“We aimed to bring fantasy and rural tourism together,” Muñoz shared with El Economista. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with bookings from the UK, the Netherlands, and the US often filling up months in advance.
Visitors can enjoy natural swimming spots in local gorges including Garganta de Cuartos and Garganta de Alardos. Guests can also stroll through the cobblestone streets of Villanueva de la Vera and Madrigal de la Vera. The outdoorsy and adventurous types can try a spot of canyoning, fishing, or simply exploring the area’s picturesque trails.
