Spanish police arrested a 43-year-old Dutchman in Moraira, Spain, who is wanted by Dutch authorities for trafficking 4,000 kilograms of cocaine in 2020.
The arrest of the 43-year-old in the Spanish coastal town of Moraira followed an international warrant issued by the Netherlands. Spanish media reported that the man is accused of organizing the importation of 4,000 kilograms of highly pure cocaine into Europe, with an estimated street value of 228 million euros. The suspect is also alleged to have used multiple front companies to facilitate the smuggling operation.
According to the Spanish National Police, the man’s operation involved sophisticated concealment methods to import the cocaine, which dates back to 2020. He is also suspected of being part of a criminal organization. If extradited to the Netherlands, the man could face up to six years in prison.
Moraira, a popular tourist destination on the Costa Blanca in Alicante Province, has increasingly attracted foreign criminals, including Dutch nationals, due to its favorable living conditions. Local authorities reported that the man had been hiding in the region to evade Dutch law enforcement. Following his capture, he was placed under the jurisdiction of Spain’s Central Investigative Court, which will decide on his extradition to the Netherlands.
The man’s arrest is the latest in a series of criminal incidents in Moraira involving foreigners. Last month, a Dutch resident was violently attacked by two masked men posing as Interpol agents. The victim suffered severe injuries during the robbery, but the perpetrators, identified as Estonian nationals, were later apprehended.
Moraira has also seen other high-profile cases involving Dutch nationals. In 2022, a 61-year-old former marine was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of his Romanian wife. Authorities found her body in a trash container between the towns of Teulada and Moraira.
