WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has finished the environmental analysis and interagency review process for the Wilmington Rail Realignment Project.

The FRA issued a “Finding of No Significant Impact” (FONSI) which means the project has no significant impacts on the quality of the environment. You can view the decision and the FONSI documents here.

The city says the project would create a bypass railroad route between the Davis Yard in Navassa and the Port of Wilmington.

“The new route would allow the relocation of freight traffic by rail from the urban heart of the city, which would benefit public safety, regional transportation mobility, and the overall efficiency of local rail operations,” the city explained.

With the completion of the analysis, the city can now look at funding options to finish the project’s final design, permit applications, and eventual construction.
