CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – UVA Health today unveiled its brand-new Mobile Care Unit at the Boys and Girls Club on Thursday, January 9.

“It’s not just about convenience,” CEO of UVA Medical Center Wendy Horton said. “It’s about meeting people where they’re at. It’s trying to truly understand the unique needs of each patient, each community, each neighborhood.”

This new Mobile Care Unit, Horton says, will help care for patients in underserved communities.

“Sometimes there’s barriers,” Horton said. “There’s geographic barriers, there’s financial barriers, there’s transportation barriers, there’s navigating the complexities of our complicated healthcare systems that really prevent people from getting their healthcare needs met.”

The Mobile Care Unit will blend caregivers with families.

“It’s a technologically advanced vehicle equipped to address the primary healthcare needs of children and adults and that’s one thing that sets it aside,” UVA Health Hospital Administrator Novella Thompson said.

Thompson says it will be able to serve a wide variety of healthcare needs on the go.

“From general health check-ups, treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, lab tests, pediatric care, women services and so much more,” Thompson said.

Each month the Mobile Care Unit will make its way through the Southwood and Fifeville neighborhoods.

Horton says it’s the first phase of a completely new approach to healthcare at UVA Health.

“This mobile care unit is really what we consider an important next step in our commitment to healthy communities,” Horton said.
