MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – UW Health has started a new group medical visit to help kids manage stress. The group is called Whole Health for Kids: Mind, Movement and Me, designed to help kids from 8 to 11 years old.
Dr. Mala Mathur is the lead facilitator of the group. She visited WMTV on Tuesday to share what how this new program will benefit children in the future.
Mathur shared that data from the Dane County Youth Assessment showed concerning statistics about high school students dealing with stress.
“Over a quarter of high school males and half of high school women indicate feeling anxiety either often or always,” Dr. Mathur said. “This is one way to address this before kids get into high school.”
The group medical visit would allow people with similar symptoms to come together and learn from health professionals as well as each other.
Mathur added there’s a lot of benefits to attending this type of session including how long patients can work with professionals.
“You get a little bit more time with health professionals because each group medical visit is about an hour-and-a-half to two hours long,” Dr. Mathur said. “It meets weekly for usually about four to eight weeks.”
