MADRID – Donald Trump’s return to the White House on 20 January should not lead the EU and the world into a militaristic drift that would lead us into a new arms race, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Tuesday.

The prime minister said the EU should strengthen its external action to be able to confront “very powerful enemies” who want to divide Europe, redraw borders or rename maps. It should also strengthen its strategic relationship with the US, which he described as an essential ally in facing current challenges.

He also advocated strengthening European security and the defence industry, although he made clear that “a militaristic drift leading us into a new arms race” should not be encouraged.

Europe “must wake up once and for all (…) in a world like this, adapting to the geopolitical reality is not enough”, the Spanish prime minister added.

Meanwhile, Sánchez called for a fair and sustainable peace in Ukraine because what is at stake is the future of that sovereign country and European security.
