The
President of Estonia, Alar Karis, has called for a full trade embargo against
Russia by the European Union, in his post on X on Feb. 9.
Karis, along with the presidents of the European Commission, Latvia, and Poland, visited Vilnius on Feb. 9 to mark the synchronization of the Baltic countries’ energy systems with continental Europe.
“The European Union must further strengthen its independence and stop importing Russian energy resources,” he said.
“We should seriously consider a full trade embargo against Russia.”
“The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the necessity of complete energy independence for European countries from Russia,” Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, added.
On Feb. 8, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia successfully disconnected from the Russian Unified Energy System (OES/UPS), which had been in place since the Soviet era. The Baltic states began operating in isolated mode, and on Feb. 9 at 02:05 p.m, they connected to Western Europe’s electricity grids.
