CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The snow has many people around town getting outside to enjoy their favorite winter activities, but with that fun comes risks, UVA Health warns.
The hospital’s emergency department reports an influx of injuries related to the snow and encourages people to stay inside if possible until conditions improve.
“Certainly after a big snowfall, we can see a range of injuries,” said Emergency Physician William Brady.
Doctor Brady said like clockwork, when it starts to snow, he sees a wide range of injuries coming into the hospital.
“With schools being out and the snow still being here, sledding accidents can occur,” Brady said. “It can be much more significant with head injuries and broken bones and that sort of thing.”
While Brady said sledding accidents are common, the biggest risk to one’s safety during these storms is just getting around.
“The two most frequent injuries are ground level falls…and slipping on a slippery surface,” Brady said. “Then the other among drivers is the motor vehicle accident.”
Brady said it does not matter one’s age; no one is guaranteed safety.
“Gravity doesn’t discriminate,” Brady said. “If you don’t have to go out, don’t go out.”
