Strolling through Plaka in Athens is a memorable experience. Our friends, Doris and Erica, showed us an ancient Greek site dating back 1,900 years. One highlight was the Diogenes Lantern near the Acropolis, built around 335 BC by Lysicrates, a choregos (patron of musical performances), to commemorate winning first prize for a sponsored musical performance. The monument is notable for being the first structure to feature Corinthian columns on its exterior and has inspired modern monuments worldwide.
The circular structure is located on Tripodon Street (Street of the Tripods). Its frieze sculptures depict scenes from the myth of Dionysus, the god whose ceremonies evolved into Greek theater. Tourists often visit the site while exploring Plaka.
Nearby, we enjoyed a lovely meal at Diogenes Café Restaurant, located at 1 Lisikratous Square. The pleasant staff served excellent food at reasonable prices. Outdoor evening dining in Athens was a delightful experience, with a relaxed atmosphere and a safe, welcoming environment. It’s a fond memory that reminds us why we love returning to Athens.
