CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – After five years in the position, UVA Health CEO and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs Craig Kent is stepping down.
Kent first found himself in hot water back in September when 128 faculty members from UVA Health signed a letter of no confidence in him and UVA’s School of Medicine Dean Dr. Melina Kibbe.
The anonymous accusations said the two turned an award winning hospital into a nightmare.
Alleged transgressions included compromising patient safety, applying undue pressure on faculty, bypassing patient safety concerns and the careless hiring of unqualified doctors.
At the time, Kent and Kibbe offered little response, writing in a joint statement they were committed to understanding the concerns.
President Jim Ryan voiced his thoughts, then, as well, releasing his own statement, calling the letter daunting with little detail, and supportive of Kent and Kibbe.
“..At this point in time I find it difficult to believe that the right answer here is to force yet another change in leadership..” Ryan wrote back in September.
Following the release of the letter, the University of Virginia hired an international law firm to investigate the claims.
It was the result of this investigation UVA’s Board of Visitors heard on Tuesday, February 25.
The details of what were in that internal investigation were not disclosed.
Following the meeting, Kent stepped down.
According to UVA Spokesperson Bethanie Glover, Kent offered his resignation and President Ryan accepted.
Doctor Mitch Rosner, a nephrologist at UVA Health. will serve as the acting executive vice president for health affairs.
Tuesday night, a spokesperson at UVA Health said it would not be making any additional comments.
