BARAGA, Mich. (WLUC) – Baraga Area Schools is the recipient of a $30,083.01 rebate check from the SEMCO Energy Gas Company.

This was for installing a new school boiler system last year to replace the 30-year-old system it used before.

“The old boilers were out of date,” Baraga Area Schools Superintendent Tim Marczak said. “And luckily our Baraga community supported a sinking fund. And so Phase One was installing a new boiler this past summer, and then we were contacted by SEMCO to apply for a rebate.”

This rebate came through the company’s Waste Reduction Program.

“If you’re able to save energy through your gas product’s boiler systems, adding insulation, window upgrades, anything you can do to reduce your gas usage will typically have some sort of rebate associated with it,” SEMCO Energy Gas Company Key Account Executive Erik Lindsay said.

Lindsey notes that any commercial, industrial, or residential customer can apply for the program. But it is not the only rebate program available.

“SEMCO does have income-qualified programs that residential customers can apply for as well,” Lindsay continued.

This includes the company’s Income Qualified Energy Efficiency Assistance Program and Multi-Family Energy Efficiency Program.

According to Marczak, the rebate check will go into the school’s general fund for future expenses.

“We have a bunch of updates with lights right now, we have a parking lot hopefully coming this summer,” Marczak continued. “Hopefully windows in the near future and a bunch of small projects in between.”

Marczak adds that phase two of the project will be installing the piping for each of the classrooms that have control of the heating system per class. He hopes that this phase will also be eligible for a rebate.
