CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – Atmos Energy has filed a statement of intent to increase gas rates within its West Texas division, including the City of Canyon, by more than $16 a month.

In the filing from Atmos, they are seeking to increase system-wide base rates by approximately $66 million.

The impact will be to increase the bill of each typical residential customer by 10% per month, which is just over $16.

The City of Canyon denied the gas rate increase at tonight’s meeting, which will send the question to the Texas Railroad Commission.

“We do have a rate council, they asked to review those. They found that those increases were too much and they didn’t have enough confidence in those, so they decided to go ahead and deny those rate cases,” said Joe Price, city manager for the City of Canyon.

The City of Canyon says its overall goal is to protect its citizens and have justifiable costs with their utilities.

“It’s just good that we’re able to speak for our community regarding rate setting for any of these private utilities, minus cable. We’re able to do that in a good fashion to make sure those costs are justified,” said Price.

They city says they have already received word from Atmos on a settlement agreement that they are currently working on.

The city manager says the original cost of $66 million could be cut in half with this settlement agreement.

They say they want to keep rates in a fair state for the citizens of Canyon.
