Tasoulas sworn in as Greece’s new president

Newly sworn-in Greek president Konstantinos Tasoulas and outgoing president Katerina Sakellaropoulou shake hands during a handover ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Athens on Thursday. The transition marked the end of Greece’s first female presidency and the beginning of a new five-year term amid domestic and international challenges. Speaking after his swearing-in at Parliament, where he was welcomed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and House Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis, Tasoulas pledged to uphold the Constitution and ensure institutional stability. He acknowledged growing public demand for governmental reform and justice, particularly in light of the deadly 2023 Tempe train disaster. Following tradition, Tasoulas laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier before heading to the Presidential Mansion for the official handover. Tasoulas’ first official visit will be to the Ministry of National Defense, followed by a trip to Ancient Olympia for the International Olympic Committee’s upcoming assembly. [Reuters]
