Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
“Captain America: Brave New World” is in the rearview mirror, as is “Invincible” Season 3 and “Creature Commandos.” “Daredevil: Born Again” is still going strong, but what about everything else that still hasn’t been released yet? We’ve got a long year ahead of comic book movies and TV shows.

For our money, here are the 5 most exciting comic book movies and TV shows still waiting to be released this year.

5. ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’
Did they finally get the Fantastic Four right? That’s the question on Marvel fans’ minds. Particularly after the 2015 version failed so miserably, this franchise needs a win. The very fact that we’re finally getting a version of Ben Grimm/The Thing which actually looks like a comic book version is promising, as is the impressive cast and the spectacular design.
4. ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2
There isn’t a lot of hype for the continuing story of “Peacemaker,” but we all know there should be. The hilarious, gory, and somehow still emotionally powerful story of an anti-hero who messed up so badly that not even the Suicide Squad wants him anymore is ripe for another chapter. We need more of the violence, and the laughs, and we desperately need another ridiculous dance routine for the intro.
3. ‘Thunderbolts*’
There was plenty of reason to feel at least a little skeptical about “Thunderbolts*” when word first dropped of the project. It seemed like Marvel was doing what it always did – with “The Avengers” and “The Defenders” – but with an anti-hero twist. But thanks to the filmmakers behind this movie, it actually looks to be an absolute blast.
2. ‘Spider-Noir’
Like “Peacemaker” Season 2, this series seems to be in desperate need of some well-deserved hype. Nicolas Cage is essentially playing a live-action version of the animated character he played in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”: an aging Spider-Man fighting crime in the 1930s. Nicolas Cage. Spider-Man. Even if this is bad, it’s going to be great.
1. ‘Superman’
What will the DCU look like? Will it even move forward? Will it succeed? All these questions depend heavily upon “Superman” making the grade and with James Gunn helming the flick, we’re cautiously optimistic. What little we’ve seen convinces us Gunn & co. are embracing the innocence of Superman without leaving behind the kind of epic action we’ve gotten used to. Here’s to hoping we will believe a man can fly.
