Greece, N.Y. (WHAM) — A Greece Central School District student is no longer attending school in person following an incident that injured a staff member, the district confirmed to 13WHAM Tuesday.
According to the district, a Greece Arcadia High School staff member was injured in a Jan. 30 incident. The extent of the staff member’s injuries is unclear, as is the nature of the incident.
Included in Tuesday’s statement is the district’s tiered system of behavioral interventions.
While we cannot discuss individual cases, we can share general information about our policies and procedures regarding student behavior and disciplinary actions. The Greece Central School District follows a tiered system of behavioral interventions as outlined in our Code of Conduct, ranging from Level 1 (minor) to Level 3B (significant). Any incident in which a staff member is injured by a student is classified as Level 3B, which typically results in either short- or long-term suspension. Federal and state law also require school districts to follow specific procedures when determining disciplinary actions for students with disabilities.
Examples provided include assault with serious bodily injury, hitting a teacher or staff member, reckless endangerment and more.
In New York state, all school districts are mandated to report violent and disruptive incidents. Greece said it “strictly adheres to all state and federal reporting requirements to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community.” It’s unclear if the injured staff member has returned to work.
We understand the public’s interest in this matter, but due to privacy laws and our commitment to protecting the confidentiality of students and staff, we cannot provide specific details.
The school district also noted “the injured staff member is not a social worker, as has been inaccurately reported by some media outlets.”
The Greece Police Department was it has not been notified nor investigated the incident.
