Spain and Portugal brace for new storms, disrupting travel for Irish tourists with severe weather warnings and potential floods.

Irish travelers may face challenging conditions this week as another storm targets key holiday spots in Spain and Portugal.

Currently, Storm Laurence is causing chaos across Spanish areas such as Malaga, Valencia, and Catalonia, with Malaga experiencing severe flooding and waterspouts. Valencia and Catalonia are preparing for further heavy rainfall expected on Tuesday. The disruption is set to continue, as Storm Martinho, named on Tuesday morning, is forecasted to unleash strong winds and heavy rainfall throughout much of Spain and Portugal over the weekend.

Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET has activated an orange alert for Andalucia on Tuesday evening, anticipating up to 80mm of rainfall within 24 hours and wind speeds reaching 75 km/h. Additional areas, including Barcelona and Girona, are under yellow alerts for Tuesday evening, with more alerts expected on Wednesday, as reported by the Irish Mirror.

The adverse weather is predicted to shift towards the west and northwest of Spain and Portugal by Wednesday, affecting locations such as Lisbon, Faro, and the Madeira island, all of which are under orange weather warnings issued by Portugal’s IPMA.

Martinho marks the fourth storm to impact this region in just 12 days, following Laurence, Konrad, and Jana, during a period of extreme weather events that have notably affected Valencia since the previous year’s devastating floods.

Irish travelers are advised to monitor local weather updates and take necessary precautions in these regions, where the blend of rain and gusty winds may hinder travel and outdoor activities.
