Trump’s Tariffs: How They Will Affect Kosovo’s Economy and Exports to the US

Economic experts estimate that the decision of US President Donald Trump to impose a basic tariff of 10 percent on imports from all countries of the world, including Kosovo, will have a negative impact. According to them, entities dealing with exports from Kosovo will face some difficulties, since if until now there have been different tariffs, now a higher tariff of 10 percent will be applied. This will narrow the profit margins for businesses exporting to the US.

During 2024, according to Kosovo Customs statistics, the country recorded exports to the US of over 39 million, 176 thousand, 701 euros, while in the first three months of 2025 the export value was 5 million, 759 thousand, 490 euros.

Trump on Wednesday also announced higher tariffs on nearly all countries that have trade surpluses with the United States, raising the risk of a trade war and rising inflation.

A tariff of 10 percent has been imposed on goods imported from Kosovo, 10 percent on those from Albania, 37 percent on Serbia, 35 percent on Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 33 percent on North Macedonia.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said that a 34 percent tariff would be imposed on imports from China, 20 percent on those from the European Union, 25 percent on South Korea and 24 percent on Japan.

Economic expert Emanuel Bajra emphasizes that the impact of tariffs on the global economy is worrying, considering that this could create a crisis and opportunities to penetrate other markets, where Kosovar exporters could find new opportunities.

He adds that for Kosovo, the effect may be minimal, but exporters operating with the US will suffer due to the 10 percent tariff.

Albanian economic expert Teuta Nunaj highlights that this decision could lead to a reduction in exports from Albania and Kosovo to the US, thus, according to her, Albania and Kosovo will lose market competitiveness, as another product will be favored.

Regarding this decision, there were also reactions from the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kosovo has been waiting with concern for the decision of US President Donald Trump to impose a 10% tax on exports from Kosovo. The announcement of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry states that this decision is expected to further hit exports, which from Kosovo to the US have been declining in recent months, reports KosovaPress.

Also, DhTIK calls on the government to come to the aid of businesses affected by this decision. While the American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo (ACCC) has requested that the Government of Kosovo withdraw the 10 percent customs tariff on goods from the United States of America.
