AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Kids Inc. received a large donation Thursday from a private donor, pushing them closer to its $30 million goal.
Kids Inc. announced it received a million dollar donation from private donor Sherry Morrison.
This donation brought the official total to $22,879,575.
Once the organization reaches $24 million, a challenge grant kicks in, pushing them up to $25 million.
“You know, the goal is to be able to submit some plans to the city in June, get those approved and go to bid in July and hopefully start construction in August. That’s kind of what we’re shooting for. There’s still dollars to raise, but we’re so close were at a point where I feel very comfortable getting started,” said Jimmy Lackey, president and CEO of Kids Inc.
Kids Inc. is hopeful they can have the project funded by summer.
“Praying right now that we don’t see some major increase between now and then. There’s a lot of stuff going on that I don’t have any control over, but you know if we can get this thing priced and done and move along, I think this summer people will start seeing things happen out there,” said Lackey.
This complex will consist of eight baseball fields, 31 soccer fields, eight Olympic-sized flag football fields, and will incorporate large parking areas for families.
Kids Inc. serves 18,000 every year, and with the addition of this complex those numbers could double, making the area a destination location for athlete competition.
There is still improvements to I-27’s TxDOT project that ties into the complex for drainage.
The City of Amarillo is also working to improve Coulter Street behind the planned complex.
