John Spain

December 31, 1953 – April 3, 2025

John Spain, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away at the age of 71 in Fort Smith. Born in Oklahoma City on December 31, 1953, to Ben Foster Spain and Doris Eileen Spain, John lived a life rich with love, curiosity, and dedication to family, music, and service.

A brilliant student, John graduated as valedictorian from Northeast High School in Oklahoma City in 1972. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Oklahoma State University, becoming a licensed engineer. Throughout his career, he contributed his expertise to Riddick Engineering, AirSystems, and Trane.

John’s passion for music began early. He played trumpet in his high school jazz and marching bands, later mastering a variety of instruments, including the banjo, classical guitar, hammer dulcimer, and recorder. He played in renaissance groups as well as folk music bands.

Beyond music, John had a deep love for history and the outdoors. He volunteered for the National Park Service at the Fort Smith National Historic Site, where he was a popular and knowledgeable docent. His enthusiasm for camping and the beauty of nature was a defining part of his life.

John was also devoted to mentoring and leadership. He served as a scout leader and scoutmaster for Wood Badge with Pack 1 and Troop 110 in Fort Smith, leaving a lasting impact on the young scouts he guided. His faith was an essential part of his life, and he was an elder and dedicated member of Central Presbyterian Church for many years.

A talented craftsman, John enjoyed building instruments, woodworking, and had a lifelong fascination with steam engines.

John is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne Spain; his sister, Kathy Spain Alexander, and her husband Bill of Bartlesville, OK; his sons and daughters-in-law, Bradford and Katie Spain of Little Rock, and Todd and Mayumi Spain of Kirkland, WA; and his cherished grandchildren, Oliver and Mia.

A memorial service will be held at the former Central Presbyterian Church sanctuary (2901 Rogers Avenue, Fort Smith) on April 12 at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church (5401 Free Ferry Road, at the corner of Free Ferry and Waldron, Fort Smith) at 2:00 pm.

Memorial gifts made be made to Central Presbyterian Church, the Boy Scouts of America, the Fort Smith National Historic Site, or the Fort Smith Museum of History.

John’s warmth, intelligence, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of music, service, and love will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
