Greece, known for its stunning beaches and endless sunshine, remains a top summer destination for British travelers.

However, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a critical warning about four potential natural disasters that could disrupt holidays in the region.

The FCDO highlighted that Greece is prone to “extreme natural phenomena,” including earthquakes, wildfires, extreme heat, and flash floods.

This warning comes amid recent erratic weather patterns in the country. In mid-March, Crete saw record-breaking temperatures of 33.7°C and Livadia hit 31.4°C, only for snow and frost to follow shortly after. Now, forecasts predict heavy rain, thunderstorms, and a sharp temperature drop in northern and northeastern Greece.

To stay informed, the FCDO urges travelers to register with the Greek Government’s Emergency Communication Service for real-time alerts. They also recommend following ‘112 Greece’ on X for official updates. With wildfire risks heightened between April and October, the FCDO emphasized the importance of enabling emergency alerts on mobile devices to receive warnings about nearby wildfires, which can be “highly dangerous and unpredictable” and escalate rapidly.

For iPhone users, the FCDO advises going to Settings > Notifications and enabling Emergency Alerts. Android users (on version 11 or later) should navigate to Settings > Notifications > Advanced Settings > Wireless Emergency Alerts to activate the feature.

This travel advisory follows broader concerns about European travel disruptions, with air traffic control authorities warning of potential flight chaos—the worst since 2001—due to staffing shortages and capacity constraints. British holidaymakers are urged to stay vigilant and prepared while planning their Greek getaways.
