GWINN, Mich. (WLUC) – You can pursue a nursing career while paying off loans in Gwinn. Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center is now an eligible employer under MDHHS’s Nurse Loan Repayment Program.
Qualified nurses can receive up to $300,000 in income-tax-free funds over a period of up to 10 years or four years for nurses employed by a state psychiatric facility. In exchange, nurses will work at the not-for-profit health center in Gwinn for two years.
Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center Nursing and Clinical Operations Director Haley Seagle says the program will open doors for nurses.
“The four-year track now for nursing is difficult financially, even as LPNs that don’t have a full four-year track,” Seagle said. “Financially, this is difficult, so this offers that opportunity to get loan repayment.“
Healthcare Workforce Division Director Amber Myers says the program recruits and retains nurses in rural areas like the U.P., which is especially important in Michigan’s nursing shortage.
“The areas with the worst social determinants of health outcomes were rural communities–or rural counties–due to being medically underserved areas and populations,” Myers said.
RNs and LPNs can start applying April 30. Find out about the application process here.
