EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Border Health Outreach Initiative, which was awarded a $3 million federal grant in February 2023, is helping deliver health care to residents in need.
According to a press release, with the help of Texas Tech Health El Paso, the initiative will help patients avoid costly medical care.
The program will utilize telehealth technology to reach those in rural areas, where access to medical services is limited by distance.
“We know that despite all of the great growth, and there’s been a lot of really positive growth in health care here in El Paso, but despite all of that growth, we are still a medically underserved community,” said Congresswoman Veronica Escobar.
The press release noted that residents in West Texas often live two to five times farther from medical facilities than the national average, making this program influential in improving health care access.
