Why hiding this in your car could hand thieves the keys to your castle.
Authorities issue stern warning to drivers about a simple habit with serious consequences.
Spain’s Guardia Civil has sounded the alarm over a seemingly harmless habit that could leave your home wide open to burglars – quite literally.
In a video published on their official TikTok channel, the Guardia Civil warned motorists not to stash their spare house keys in their car’s glovebox. It might seem like a convenient hiding spot while you go for a run or pop to the beach, or even while you’re away on holiday, but it could be a burglar’s golden ticket.
An officer featured in the clip explained:

‘Some drivers leave house keys inside their parked vehicle for several days when they go on holiday.’
It’s a double whammy for would-be thieves. Alongside those keys, drivers often keep insurance documents, receipts, or other paperwork that lists their home address – the perfect pairing for a clean, quiet break-in.
The officer continued:
‘There have been several cases where thieves got inside a vehicle and, through documents like insurance papers or repair invoices, found out the home address and used the house keys to get in.’
No smashed windows. No noisy break-ins. Just a thief walking through your front door – with your own keys.
The worst part? ‘When you return from holiday, you may find you’ve been burgled – and no one, not even the neighbours, noticed anything because the criminals entered silently with your own keys.’ It’s a chilling thought that’s all too real.
So what should you do? The Guardia Civil keeps it simple:
“Don’t leave valuables in the vehicle. And if you absolutely must, don’t leave them in plain sight.”
The video has racked up thousands of views, prompting debate among drivers who admitted to leaving spare keys in glove compartments ‘just in case.’
The bottom line?
Your glovebox is no vault. Leaving your keys in the glovebox is dangerous, even iif your’e only popping to the beach, particularly if you’re leaving your car in a remote area where thieves could easily get in without being seen. And in the wrong hands, your car could become the gateway to a far bigger haul.
Top tips to stay safe this summer:
- Never leave house keys in your car – especially if documents inside show your address.
- Avoid storing any valuables in the glovebox.
- Keep essential documents at home – or securely locked away.
- Tell a trusted neighbour if you’re going away.
- Use timers for lights to make your home look lived-in.
