GREECE, N.Y. — A woman is dead after her car went off Long Pond Road and into an inlet of Lake Ontario on Sunday evening.
New York State Police say they initially responded for a welfare check on someone who said they would harm themselves. Soon after, Greece Police spotted the person’s car driving on Long Pond Road.
Security camera footage captured a woman driving down the road, onto a property, and then crashing into a tree. The footage also showed her car hitting a shed on the opposite side of inlet before falling into the water.
Greece Police crews went into the water to try to rescue the woman but she died of her injuries. The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office is doing an autopsy and the investigation is ongoing.
Several neighbors told News10NBC that this is not the first time such an accident has occurred. They said three cars have driven off this road in the last five years.
