Steve Pikiell has gone outside the box for the most important missing piece of the 2025-26 Rutgers basketball roster.

Bosnian wing Harun Zrno, a 6-foot-7, Class of 2025 sharpshooter, committed to the Scarlet Knights Monday.

Here are three things to know about him:

    1. He was one of the top remaining prospects in the Class of 2025.

Zrno is a shooter who converted 43.7 percent of his 3-pointers playing at the Division I club level this season in Bosnia (hitting 31 of 71 attempts), which is a pretty good basketball country (notable hoopers include former Iowa star Luka Garza and NBA big man Jusuf Nurkić). Zrno also hit 77 percent of his free throws and 56 percent of his 2-pointers and averaged 17.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Although he has four years of eligibility in front of him, Zrno is 21 years old, so he’s a mature player.

    2. He was originally committed to Indiana.

Zrno re-opened his recruitment in March after Hoosiers head coach Mike Woodson stepped down. Among his other finalists at the time of his first commitment were Creighton, Wisconsin and Virginia. After his decommitment, he visited Miami and Villanova. Rutgers has quietly been involved with him for a while now, so this didn’t exactly come out of nowhere.

    3. He fills a dire need.

The missing piece to the puzzle for Rutgers was perimeter shooting. Zrno can play either two-guard or wing. He’s long, so that should be something for Pikiell and his assistants to work with defensively. And he’s a better value than anything comparable that can be pulled from the insanely inflationary transfer portal right now.

Pikiell has kept a close eye on the European scene for years — he recruited wing Akwasi Yeboah out of England to Stony Brook (and later Rutgers), forward Candido Sa from Portugal and wing Oskar Palmquist from Sweden. That eye paid off here, as the Scarlet Knights were well-positioned to capitalize on Zrno’s decommitment.

With one more scholarship to give out (Pikiell almost certainly will stick to the traditional 13), look for Rutgers to target another two-guard or wing shooter type of player to add more perimeter shooting options.
