The New Zealand Defence Force intends to replace its maritime helicopters, the Seasprite SH2-G(I), at a cost of NZ$2billion (US$1.2 billion), part of a major ramp-up in military spending.

New Zealand has eight Seasprite helicopters in its fleet, operated by No. 6 Squadron, with aircrew from the Royal New Zealand Navy.

The aircraft were initially delivered in 2015, replacing the previous SH-2G(NZ) model, and are primarily used for anti-surface warfare, underwater warfare, and maritime patrols and surveillance.

Its other roles include search-and-rescue, utility operations, training for aircrews and flight deck teams, and domestic tasks for government agencies.

Seasprite helicopters are maintained by technicians from the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Wellington said it also plans to ramp up defense spending by NZ$957 million (US$573 million) over the next four years to fund essential operational activity.

“Our personnel are being called upon to go more places, more often and for longer to play New Zealand’s part in contributing to global security,” said Defence Minister Judith Collins in a statement. “This funding will enable them to do that.”
