After months of recovery, 16-year-old Dominic Barcomb is back in action once again playing high school sports with the people who supported him along the way.On Jan. 2 of this year, Dominic’s life changed forever. His heart stopped on the basketball court during a game between Milton and Spaulding High Schools. He collapsed, going into cardiac arrest, leaving his loved ones on the sidelines, hoping and praying for a heartbeat.”I don’t know what I would have done without him,” said Jenny Smith, Dom’s mom.Thanks to life-saving efforts on the scene that day, Dom got the medical care he needed and has since made a full recovery.”I’m feeling pumped,” said Barcomb. “Very excited to be back on the field and throw some disc with some of my favorite people that I know.”It’s been months since Dom played a sport. After 10 practices with the team and a note from his doctor, he was cleared to play his first ultimate frisbee match of the season for Milton High School with some of the same people who stood by his side, cheering him on.”It’s good to know that the community can give that much love to a family,” said Jeff Smith, Dom’s grandfather. “It’s unbelievable.”Dom will be splitting his time between the varsity and junior varsity teams this season, taking breaks when needed.”Coach says I’m rusty,” joked Barcomb.His coach and teammates are happy to have him back on the bench and in the lineup.”I’m his adviser in school, and one of his basketball coaches and his frisbee coach,” said coach Anthony Dolcimascolo. “I’m no stranger to Dom. He’s a great dude to be around.”They call Dom an inspiration on and off the field.”Having everyone’s support just felt so good, knowing everyone has been there for him. He’s such an amazing kid,” said Keagan Fitzgerald, Dom’s cousin.Though he has a full season of ultimate ahead of him, Dominic says he is counting the days until he can make his return to the basketball court come winter.
