The new pope's choice of name was deliberate; he chose it to honor Pope Leo XIII who was Pope from 1878 – 1903. Leo XIII is famous for taking a left-wing stance on workers' rights in response to the Industrial Revolution, and calling for state pensions, social security, and other reforms rooted in social democracy.
It will be interesting to see what Pope Leo XIV calls for. Universal Basic Income? It wouldn't surprise me. The day is soon coming when humans won't be able to economically compete with ultra-cheap AI/robot-employee staffed businesses.
Some people scoff at the notion of the Catholic Church concerning itself with such things. If they do, they're underestimating the Church's vast soft power. Vatican City might be the world's smallest state, but the Catholic Church is arguably the preeminent global superpower when it comes to soft power.
There are 1.4 billion Catholics, and if the church decides to support UBI, it will have a vast reach to sway politicians in 100+ countries on almost every continent.
Will the Catholic Church soon support UBI? In his first meeting with the cardinals, Pope Leo XIV said the impact of AI and robotics on work will be a central focus of his papacy.

I am pretty sure it’s not about UBI, given the tune in the article.
UBI is a tricky one. Thing is the current system is a balance between companies (owners of the means of production), people (the producers) and government (supposedly represents the people and the use of force) When the producers are not the people, but the machines owned by companies, what power will we hold? And specially if we’re just an “unnecessary added maintenance”.
And don’t say the power of friendship, this can get ugly real quick if we get replaced in the workforce.
I don’t see UBI as a complete solution
Would bet a lot on no. He probably just wants to stop AI from doing humans jobs.
Not happening. Even if he suggests it, no first world country will bite. Certainly not the US.
Might be time to move to the UK now if this becomes a reality
With AI coming, even I as a fiscal conservative see that UBI is inevitable. I don’t see any way around it.
