> The number of billionaires in the UK has grown sharply – from 15 in 1990 to 165 in 2024 – at the same time as inequality in the UK’s overall wealth distribution has dramatically increased, analysis has found.
> Timed to coincide with the Sunday Times’ rich list, the Equality Trust’s investigation also found that billionaires have become “ludicrously” more wealthy, with their average wealth rocketing by more than 1,000% over the same period.
Gonna think about articles like this every time someone asks ‘how are we going to pay’ for vital public services.
The money’s still there. It’s just being increasingly hoarded by a tiny number of people at the very top. The richest people in society have become 1000% more richer over the past 35 years, can the average person in this country claim anything close to that?

That’s how this economic system works. It seems that the majority don’t care about these disparities as long as there is food on the table.

Some of these families have been wealthy since Norman invasion when they took power with brute force, yet they get special treatment and deference on top of wealth and inherent privilege

No it’s actually Rashid and his family coming over on all those boats that are withholding the country’s wealth. Nigel Farage said so!!!!!

Sad thing is, Reform UK LTD PLC INC voter “Steve from Blackburn” thinks that, by voting Reform UK LTD PLC INC, he may just one day also become a billionaire, despite dropping out of school at 4, having 473 criminal convictions, not a single qualification, and can barely speak his own language.

This should be common knowledge for everyone, but the billionaire backed daily mail has been corroding the minds of the British lower class who think the problem are the people who come in boats, not the ones who fly 20 minutes in private jets.

The argument of “there’s not enough money” for public services, investment or infrastructure is just complete and utter bollocks innit.

The government should be forcibly taking the wealth they’re hoarding ngl. There’s no reason why a single person should be nearly as rich as a nation

It’d be considerably more palatable if it even remotely resembled a meritocracy.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that
The problem is the lack liquidity of their assets and the lack of reinvestment of capital

So much ridiculousness here…
The issue this country has is the wealthy here do not take RISKS with their money. You don’t see British VCs blowing money on ridiculous start ups, which is a bad thing. We need to create an environment where we encourage risky investments by wealthy people.
Businesses dont invest in productive assets either. Old money wealthy here just want to get blood from a stone.

I too have a capitalist bias but when I see that the late Queen’s Estate and King Charles have NO liability to pay re inheritance tax, and the wealthiest like Duke of Westminster only pay 6% every 10 years ( equivalent to 67 years at standard 40%) then my inner Corbyn comes out. I shrug my shoulders as we know every shade of government isn’t going to make decisions that benefit us for long term ( such as how do we change the tax rules to stop multinationals paying nominal corporation tax) as they are really only interested in the next 3-5 years and keeping their parliamentary power before taking a directorship at one of their mates companies. Having read this back maybe I’m really a socialist with a centre right bias. Off to bed now!
