The Dayton Agreement, also known as the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), is a peace agreement that ended the Bosnian War in 1995. It was signed in Dayton, Ohio, by representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Yugoslavia (then Serbia and Montenegro).
Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman is in the United States, where he is participating in a NATO Parliamentary Assembly session in Dayton Ohio to mark the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Agreement. The Croatian Foreign Minister warned the participants that the rights of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina continue to be threatened due to the openly discriminatory election law in that country. Grlić Radman went on to call for the reforming of the election law in Bosnia and Herzegovina so as to stabilize relations between the three constituent peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia’s, Muslims and Serbs.
Minister Grlić Radman also reminded that Croatia’s engagement had helped turn the tide of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ultimately contributed to peace negotiations and the signing of the Dayton Agreement. However, the minister stressed that the peace established in 1995 did not bring the expected stability or reconciliation to the country, which is now facing the challenges of both separatism and unitarism. Grlić Radman warned that the civic and unitarist model of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s organization only serve as masks for the political domination of the Bosnian Muslim population, and that of federal model is the only true answer to the country’s internal divisions.
Meanwhile, the US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said that the administration of President Donald Trump wants the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina to stabilize, but added that it will not support unrealistic goals. For his part, the Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, expressed his gratitude to the Trump administration for its continued support, but warned that the current crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the direct result of actions of the authorities in Serb entity.
