RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Hurricane season is here again, and Dominion Energy is telling Virginians to start getting ready.
“Think about your own needs,” said Craig Carper, the spokesman for Dominion Energy.
While those needs may look different for every family, Dominion Energy has an easy checklist to help you get a head start. It includes fully juiced portable chargers, important personal documents and cash at the ready, as well as something as simple as knowing where your child’s favorite toy is during an emergency.
“We hope for the best and plan for the worst, and that’s what we encourage everyone else to do,” he said.
They even have a family disaster checklist from the American Red Cross on their website, which helps you plan for an evacuation.
Carper said you’ll also want to stock up on a few of these items, including a case of water, canned goods or non-perishables, batteries for flashlights, and refills on any medications you might need.
“Every storm season is different. What we are expecting is slightly above average, so we want people to take that seriously, make sure they’re making plans,” he said.
Dominion Energy continues its initiative to bury power lines in neighborhoods most prone to outages. Carper said this makes outages less frequent and shorter, cutting the average restoration time from eleven hours to two minutes.
“It’s not that they don’t ever notice any disruption in power, but they’re momentary, they’re pauses, they’re blinks,” Carper said.
Some of the things to remember this hurricane season:
- Get your generator serviced and ensure it’s in a place with good ventilation.
- If you come across a downed power line, stay at least 30 feet away.
- Download the Dominion Energy app to stay updated on outages in your area.
