Revise the town and country planning act of 1947 to deal with this NIMBY nonsense. Get Britain building again.

That’s disappointing. We should be doing everything we can to encourage the cultural sector. With all the government’s rhetoric, it’s surprising they wouldn’t approve something like this.

This seems like the kind of scheme we should be backing to enable small and medium businesses to thrive in this country, which will grow the economy and attract big business.

The solution should be forcing them to buy a bunch of land around the site and turning it into a managed forest, open to the public.

I really dont understand our governments. We know exactly what legislation is hampering growth and stopping planning being granted.
Why wasnt changes to the legislation drafted in the run up to the election and pushed through shortly after their whopping majority was won?

Amazing how such a small amount of people can reject something that will benefit so many more

The government should use prisoners to restore grey belt/waste land to neutral so that we aren’t building on green fields but resetting and repurposing derelict land. It would give prisoners a skill set to move into the construction sector on release, make it more cost effective for developers to build and remove the NIMBYs argument

This really helps the TV and film industry that has great talent but is on its knees… Pure madness.

If you allow everything to be built on the green belt then there’s no point in even having it. If you want to build this somewhere which isn’t protected then I’m sure it will get accepted. The article also says that we don’t really need more studio space anyway.

There’s quite a few TV/fims studios around here and at the moment the industry is struggling by all accounts so not sure why they needed more.

Who needs jobs, infrastructure, and the global soft power that comes from a thriving movie industry?
Not the UK apparently.

This isn’t nimbyism guys, read the article. A minister had the final say on this and stated that there’s no need for a new studio.
Whether they’re right or wrong, elected ministers have determined this based on economic grounds

Yesterday this sub was raging that the government weakening environment protections would allow developers to build in protected nature spaces, today this sub is raging about the government blocking development in the greenbelt nature spaces.
I’m so glad redditors aren’t in charge of the country.

They applied for building in the green belt which is not for building. End of story.

Demand for UK production facilities has exploded and it’s a sad reflection of our economically suicidal planning system that this proposal has been rejected.

So don’t build it in the Greenbelt. Are these people really this stupid?
marknotgeorge on
If the facilities truly are needed, there’s plenty of spare space in the country that’s not green belt in the already crowded South East.

Studios are struggling for film production business and with increasing technological improvements, it’s going to get worse. As for TV, it can go take a flying jump as far as I’m concerned. It’s ALL garbage.

> In March 2024, councillors refused planning permission because of concerns about the green belt.
> RBWM said Greystoke had overstated the economic case for the studio
> development of other studios in Berkshire and the south east meant there was less of a case for building another one in Holyport.
> a decisions officer said the government supported “the growth of the creative industries in the UK” but there was “likely to be sufficient capacity within existing studio space” for the industry “for the immediate future”.
Not a NIMBY but it sounds like a sensible move to refuse permission for one of the biggest studios whose success might come at the expense of numerous smaller ones around the region, green belt issues aside.
The rest of UK could welcome and benefit from similar new investments and infrastructures in their area.

if only there was lots of brownfield spaces available

Probably because Sunderland is building the biggest movie studio in Europe right now.

Do we need another studio? With Warner’s & Pinewood, Manchesters TV & Sunderland’s new studio is the demand there for more?

Can’t someone go back to that one in Waltham cross? Sunset studios I think it’s called? It’s funny, when you drive past it still has all the boarding around it saying how amazing it’s gonna be.

Do they need to be in Windsor? Plenty of huge ex industrial lands around the county and within reach of London
_pierogii on
There’s already studios being built in Wycombe and Marlow, and Pinewood is nearby. Maybe see how successful those are before destroying more Greenbelt land?
PlanktonAntique9075 on
I’m glad tbh as they are building a big one in Sunderland and that will be great for the north east.
This film studio could’ve drawn away money from the North and to the South.
Not dissing the South, just about time the money we made from coal and pumped into London service industry was given back to us
