Kosovo is flooded with huge offers and requests for prison cells for rent from European countries

The Head of the Kosovo Correctional Service, Ismail Dibrani, in a conversation he had with the French media “AFP” Regarding the agreement that Kosovo has made with Denmark for the rental of prison cells, it has been confirmed that Kosovo has been flooded with many other requests from numerous European countries, Gazeta Express reports.
Dibrani has indicated that these countries have also offered large sums of money to reach agreements, however, he says that Kosovo has not considered those requests at all so far.
“After signing the agreement, we received numerous requests from European countries for large sums of money. But we have not yet discussed them,” he added. “We already have a lot of work to do for our country,” Dibrani told AFP, according to Express.
He also indicated that Kosovo has capacity in its prisons, since out of 2800 cells, only 1800 are occupied by prisoners.
“Unlike most European countries, which are facing prison overcrowding, we have sufficient capacity. Our prison capacity is currently 2,800 places, while we currently have around 1,800 prisoners,” Dibrani added to the French media outlet.

By 2027, Denmark will relocate its foreign prisoners to a detention center in Kosovo. The agreement, concluded in 2022 and ratified by Kosovo MPs in 2024, foresees the acceptance of up to 300 foreign prisoners sentenced to life in prison in Denmark. None of them must have been convicted of terrorism or war crimes, nor must they suffer from mental illness or any incurable disease. Once their sentence in Kosovo is over, they will be sent to their country of origin. In return, Denmark will pay 200 million euros – more than six times the annual budget of the Kosovo Ministry of Justice./GazetaExpress/
