High temperatures in Kosovo, doctors: Avoid peak times of day, diet very important

On these hot days, doctors suggest citizens take extra care, especially during the peak of the day.
Specialist at the Family Medicine Center (FMC) in Pristina, Rushit Ismajli, in an interview with Ekonomia Online, noted that after a cold May, the sudden rise in temperatures in June has caused difficulties in adapting for citizens.
“We went through a period of very low temperatures. May was low, then in June the temperatures suddenly rose. There were difficulties in people adapting to these temperatures and we immediately saw that some people were just burned. What they should be careful about is to first avoid the peak of the day from 10:00 to 17:00, because at this time the temperatures are high. It can cause dehydration, skin burns, which is a risk for skin cancer,” said Ismajli.
Ismajli recommends consuming at least two liters of water per day and a healthy diet with fresh fruits and vegetables.
“What I would advise citizens, all age groups, especially pregnant women, young children and the elderly, is that in addition to not going out in the middle of the day, they should consume sufficient amounts of water, at least two liters per day. Temperatures are expected to increase. What we recommend is that they take care to avoid high temperatures. We have had cases, but we have managed them and advised them to wear light-colored and lightweight clothing and to wear hats,” he added.
Doctor Ismajli also emphasizes diet.
“Diet is very important. It should mainly be a healthy diet and eat fresh foods: fruits and vegetables. Wash vegetables in running water. The same goes for fruits. Do not consume excessive amounts of salt, fat, sugar, as well as pastries. Do not eat where there are fast foods, sandwiches, hamburgers, kebabs, etc.,” Ismajli told EO.
