>The chief secretary to the Treasury made the erroneous claim on the BBC’s Question Time programme on Thursday night.
>He was challenged on the programme by former Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf, who claimed that more than 90% of those on the boats were men.
>In actual fact, Home Office data indicates that adult males made up 73% of small boat arrivals between January 2018 and March 2025.
I believe him in the sense that he probably really did see an individual boat with mostly woman and children. The way he spoke was clumsy at best though, and he should have known better. Anyway this should now be the end of the matter

That’s very little and it’s very late. Senior ministers should not be able to make grubby attempts to emotionally manipulate the public.
It was a scummy move and trying to initially defend the comments and then move on by calling everyone else dishonest is easily resignation territory.

Can I ask what’s the issue with it being mostly men anyway? It’s funny that the crowd that screams about men being forgotten in society don’t believe men can be legitimate refugees
As usual, no one can answer the question just downvote
Glad the consensus is he never actually really thought this, only thought it was a good idea to win some emotional points in favour of his side. When people as ‘serious’ as Jones resort to this kind of thing it really highlights just how deeply uninterested in truth 99% of people are.
You might blame politicians for being uniquely untruthful, but this is wrong in my view. Everybody and their dog is at it.
On the other hand, the fact that most small boat entrants are working age men is not a condemnation of the migrants. Getting across Europe and across the Channel is a significant physical challenge. It’s not surprising that fewer women, children and elderly can do it.
He straight up lied. So anything he says from this point on is not to be believed.
I don’t like it but expect politicians to lie, what I find more concerning is that his judgement was so impaired that he thought this was a lie he could have got away with.
He should resign. A senior minister shouldn’t be spreading fake news on TV.
