Spain / submitted by Cindy Hamilton of Virginia Beach

Choosing a favorite photo from my monthlong adventure through Spain, which I returned from in May, feels almost impossible. Most of my shots came from a birding tour that started in Madrid and swept through the southern countryside, which yielded nearly 200 species. The final leg of the journey took me to the Camino de Santiago, where I hiked along stunning, timeworn trails. Before tackling the Camino, I paused in Córdoba to recharge — and to photograph the Mezquita before the crowds arrived. Originally built as a mosque in 784-786 and gradually transformed into a mosque-cathedral after the Christian conquest in 1236, the Mezquita is an inspiring blend of architectural styles. The photo I chose captures a forest of its famed columns — more than a thousand in all — bathed in morning light.
