BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An old hotel in Birmingham is set to be transformed into affordable housing. The Economy Lodge, located off Crestwood Boulevard, has been purchased by Endeavor Group Real Estate, which plans to convert it into affordable apartments.

Back in 2021 the city revoked the hotel’s business license after becoming a crime hotspot. Now the space will serve the community.

The development will feature 226 studio units, along with amenities such as a laundromat and gym. The apartments will offer all-inclusive pricing, covering rent and utilities, with prices starting at approximately $950 a month.

Kourtney Effinger, a Birmingham resident, expressed optimism about the project. “People need places to stay and then rent is like 1200 to 2000 dollars,” she said. “Nobody wants to be out of money at that and then groceries are high now and everything is expensive. Nobody wants to pay more bills on top of extra bills they have.”

The apartments will also feature artwork contributed by local artists on the building’s exterior. The first 60 units are expected to be on the market by August, with the remainder of the units completed by early 2026.
