Dierks Bentley treated fans to a setlist packed with hits when the Broken Branches Tour played Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Friday, June 20, with special guests Zach Top and The Band Loula.

The tour is in support of “Broken Branches,” an album he released a week before the road brought Bentley home to Phoenix, headlining an amphitheater that fueled his dreams of growing up to be a country star.

The singer did two songs from “Broken Branches,” opening the show with “Well Well Whiskey” in a bluegrass-tinged medley with “Up on the Ridge” and dusting off “She Hates Me,” the album’s playful lead single, three songs later.

But Bentley likes to give the people what they want, which meant a setlist packed with such crowd-pleasing classics as “What Was I Thinkin’,” “Free and Easy (Down the Road I Go),” which segued into Alabama’s “Mountain Music,” “Am I the Only One,” “5-1-5-0,” “I Hold On,” “Say You Do,” “Riser,” “Somewhere on a Beach,” “Black,” “Living” and “Drunk on a Plane.”

There were also some well-chosen covers beyond the Alabama song, from Bill Monroe’s “Get Down on Your Knees and Pray” to the Oak Ridge Boys’ “Callin’ Baton Rouge” and Keith Allison’s “Freeborn Man.”

And that’s before he came back for a second encore with Hot Country Knights.
