TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – As we move into summer, Northeast Kansas is starting to feel the effects of the season, with hot weather moving into the area.
“Air conditioners are running quite a bit here in Kansas and across the Midwest, because summer brings triple-digit heat,” said Courtney Lewis, a spokesperson for Evergy. “Evergy customers use the most electricity during these months than any other time of year. And we know that the more energy you use, the higher your bills tend to be.”
Lewis has some tips to keep you cool this summer, without breaking the bank.
“Changing your HVAC filter regularly will help keep the air flowing and means that your air conditioner is working at efficiency and not working overtime. Close your blinds or pull your shades or your curtains. It helps block the sunlight from coming into your house, especially for South or West-facing windows. If you have fans in your home, particularly ceiling fans, turn them counterclockwise. That pushes cool air down. Ovens can release a lot of heat, and it makes it harder to keep your home cool. If you have things like a microwave, air fryer, use those instead.”
While it feels nice to keep your home frosty, you may want to bump up your home’s temperature by a few degrees.
“Adjusting your thermostat and adjusting your air conditioning is a great way to save how much energy you use. Even adjusting it 3 to 5 degrees…can make a big difference in how much energy you use,” said Lewis.
Smart Thermostats can help, which Evergy offers with rebates. The company can also audit homes for more rebates.
Lewis says, “Contact an Evergy-approved auditor to go into your home, and that energy auditor will go in and take a look at places where you can make improvements. They will make some recommendations on how you can make those improvements, and when that auditor recommends improvements, Evergy will give you a rebate once those are complete. If you need to replace your HVAC system, Evergy will give you up to $1000 in rebates to do that.”
