MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Temperatures will be heating up across Southern Wisconsin this weekend.

First Alert Days have been issued as temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s as the start of summer rolls in.

Experts say it’s important to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion as well as heat stroke.

Below is a list of signs:

  • feeling thirsty
  • feeling fatigued or weak
  • nausea
  • headaches or dizziness

An expert with SSM Health said staying hydrated is always crucial.

“Even if patients don’t, or even if people don’t feel like they’re thirsty, you gotta be drinking because before you know it, your way behind the 8 ball,” said Dr. Christopher Harkin with SSM Health.

He said vulnerable groups like babies and elderly people should limit their time outside.

Dr. Harkin recommends being in the sun for only about 20 minutes before heading into the shade.

Good sunscreen and a hat can also help protect you from the sun.
