Iran can not be allowed to have nukes. Iran should surrender now when they have the opportunity.

  2. The Leader of “Civilized world” , the “free world” , the “Law based order” , the “Western values” .

    You can`t write such irony…

  3. He is from Moderaterna (EPP) and has since forever been pro-NATO, pro-USA ,and pro-Israel. So worth noting that this is one of the most respected people from the right in Sweden, not the left. So one can assume most to the left think the same or more so

  4. That’s true but we live in times when nobody respects the international law unfortunately. The USA especially to the point of sanctioning ICC prosecutor.

And so long as all the international community does about it is say what it is, they’ll continue doing it.

  5. SpaceKappa42 on

Sure, but the USA doesn’t acknowledge international law. You’d think our politicians (current and former) knew this?

  6. “International law” has weight right up to the point it stops a decently powerful state from doing something that its government wants to do.

Then it collapses into being exposed as nothing more than established norms and vibes pretty quick.

  7. maximalusdenandre on

“I don’t want to hear any EU-statements about the USA ‘having a right to defend itself’. This is a clear-cut violation of international law.”

    Was his precise words.

  8. NARVALhacker69 on

And then we have Kaja Kallas praising USA and Israel for starting a war of agression, worst high representative ever

  9. NARVALhacker69 on

Friendly reminder that “International Law” and the “rules based world order” are just tools to punish countries that don’t obey the United States, proof of that is that western-aligned countries never face sanctions or consequences for their actions, only countries hostile to the US do

  10. Let’s be honest, International Law doesn’t apply to the major powers like USA, China, etc. It only applies to every other little guy.

  11. SteakHausMann on

Since March 2014, international law has lost its meaning, some may even argue since March 2003

There is no point in laws, that arent enforced.

I would love for international law to be globally accepted, but it means there have to be consequences if you break it, no matter what nation you are.

Otherwise its nothing but lip service

  12. Not just international law. The G7 are a joke, the UN is a joke etc.

You cant have a UN that works as long as there are veto powers in it and no clear rules to how to get things done. Many, but not enough want to do climate change? Good, get those together and do it, forget the rest.

Even the ICJ which has an actual contract, gets hand waved away by Merz (arrest warrent for Bibi)

  13. TheoryOfDevolution on

A statement by some former has-been of a PM is not sufficient to warrant commenting on the US-Iran conflict. People use these types of post to shoehorn the US into /r/Europe. Stop it.

The US is not a European country. Iran is not our problem, let Israel deal with them. We don’t have to take any refugees, let the other Muslim countries take them. There’s a million things more important in Europe than some theocratic regime getting their teeth kicked in by the Jews and Yanks.

  14. Beneficial-Movie83 on

All the global institutions, frameworks and norms that were built around a post-war Europe are just illusions now.

It would be better if Europe puts it’s energy into reshaping itself for the new world, rather than mourning or clinging to the past.

Europe must be able to project hard power in its defence, it must reform internally to become more credible and responsive to it’s citizens needs, and it must become an economic engine to compete for the top spot.

Lol – I really detest this kind of political posturing.

“International Law” is largely a farce.

I mean all it can ever be is agreements between countries – you sign here to say you won’t do X – then if you later do X, you’ve broken your word.

Where it is strongest and most clear cut is when it comes to our oceans and seas, but China doesn’t respect this for example.

On war, it’s just plain stupid imo – I mean for example I find it utterly ridiculous that Ukraine has to limit what it can do against Russia because of the rules Western nations insist it play by, while Russia is completely free to do whatever the hell it likes.

Condemn nations for what they do by all means, but don’t pretend that there’s a world order in place.

  16. Independent-Day-9170 on

    Yes, it obviously is.

Which doesn’t matter, as the Rules-Based World Order was gradually dismantled by Biden, and killed solidly stone-cold dead by Trump.

We’re now, by US bipartisan agreement, in the Balance of Great Powers aka Spheres of Interest world order, where the strong do what they want and the weak suffer what they must.

  17. Chemical-Drawer852 on

The Berlin Conference of 1884–85, which partitioned Africa among European powers, operated under the pretense of legality and order, masking raw conquest.

“International Law” has always been a hypocritical tool, and the western powers that be are shocked to the core that the ICC had the **audacity** to go for Netanyahu and not some disposable African despot like they usually do.

  18. Sadly, international law is ignored and basically dead. Nobody stands for it anymore. The UN has devolved in a platform for exchanging prepared statements and has no other purpose any longer. All the grown ups have left the room and we are back at square one: might is right. There are no more shared values, facts or truths, but only tribes, opinions and propaganda. Global war is on our doorstep.

  19. Why Are people siding with Iran when they are getting nuclear weapons wich is against international law???

  20. Darksoldierr on

Let’s not pretend that suddenly everyone who dislikes Trump and US policy as of late would have been happy with Iran having nukes.

  21. medievalvelocipede on

There’s a lot of ‘international law doesn’t apply to major powers’ in this thread.

You should stop and think about what you’re saying. Just because they can do violations doesn’t mean we shouldn’t call them out on it and it doesn’t mean we should just let them do it without resistance. Remember, this exact same argument is what’s pushed by Russia, China and the US. Are you just going to say, ‘this is fine’? Because it’s not fine.

  22. Secure_Anything on

Let’s call them what they are. They are international suggestions, at a most international guidelines. If no enforcement happens then they aren’t worth the paper they’re written on

  23. Mother-Boat2958 on

He’s totally right and I wish more people would call out this attack for what it is. So much pussyfooting going on with EU leaders right now.

  24. Automatic-Flounder-3 on

I wonder what he said about Iran funding and equipping Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis or Iran, and its proxy groups attacking US military bases and navy ships?

  25. There is no “international law” and quotes citing something like that are just blows below the belt. Doesn’t help anyone in any way.

  26. If you think the US is breaking the law, you should sanction them. If we are not, then we are accepting that international law is their law

  27. What Trump did was illegal and Bildt is a monster.

Bildt is a mass murderer he murdered millions of people in Sudan and forces millions from their homes, as he stole their land to pump up oil, he and others at Lundin Petroleum.

Bildt and the others from Lundin Petroleum are Sweden’s greatest mass murderers.

He is however a lapdog to the US.

During the cold war he broke Swedish law, he was not PM then. just a MP, in the 1980s he sent classified information to the US, and even before informing the Swedish government about the information, the first thing that he did when he got it, was to send it to the US.

The information came out much later.

”MODERATE (CONSERVATIVE) MP AND SUB COMMISSION MEMBER CARL BILDT (PLEASE PROTECT FULLY) HAS GIVEN US A PREVIEW OF THE COMMISSION REPORT WHICH WILL BE PUBLISHED TOMORROW. /…/ BILDT THINKS THE SWEDISH PUBLIC WILL BE SHOCKED BY THE REPORT’S DESCRIPTION OF THE SCOPE OF THE INTRUSIONS”

He leaked other information as well, for many years.

  28. War in Iran means another refugee crisis in Europe. Isreal and US are actively sabotaging Europe for years. EU needs to take actions and stop this war before it escalates even more!

  29. Hvalhemligheten on

He was last prime minister in 1994. I mean, yeah I agree with him, but maybe ask someone with more recent experience?

  30. Realistic-Stable2852 on

Is anyone going to do anything about it though? International law is nice and all, but it’s literally unenforceable, and most countries genuinely just do not care about it, including some of the strongest ones in the world, it might as well not exist in practise.

  31. no current leader in europe will say anything or do anything because we remain US vassals
