TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus announced on Monday, June 23, its partnership with Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program.
According to a press release from The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus, this collaboration underscores the hospital’s commitment to supporting newly graduated nurses as they transition into clinical practice.
The nationally recognized program is designed to enhance patient care by promoting quality, safety, and retention among first-year nurses.
“We are thrilled to welcome our first cohort of nurse residents using the Vizient curriculum. Not only are we the first in the Topeka region to offer the Vizient/AACN curriculum to new graduate nurses, but this program provides the mentorship, training, and support our new nurses need to grow in confidence and competence, ensuring they deliver exceptional care to our patients.”
The year-long program is designed for recent nursing graduates and registered nurses (RNs) within their first year of practice. Eligible participants must have a Kansas nursing license and a degree from an accredited college or university. The residency also supports surgery nurses and non-traditional graduates transitioning into acute care settings.
The first cohort of nurse residents will begin their journey with an immersive twelve-week orientation, followed by monthly seminars over the next 12 months. Guided by experienced preceptors, they will expand their clinical skills and professional development through hands-on training and discussions on workplace well-being, leadership, and career growth.
Since 2002, the Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program has helped healthcare organizations bridge the gap between nursing education and practice. The Institute of Medicine recognizes it as a model for easing the transition into the profession.
